What this book is
Polski na B1 is a book of complete sample exams for the B1 Polish certificate, written by Berenika Wilczyńska — a teacher of Polish as a foreign language and a certificate examiner — and published by HelloPolish in Warsaw. The first edition (2021) was subtitled "exercises preparing for the certificate exam"; the second, revised edition (2023) is called "sample certificate tests" and has about 176 pages. The ISBN above is for the 2023 edition.
The book contains 7 full mock exams, each with all five parts of the real exam: listening, reading, grammar, writing and speaking — 161 tasks of the same types as on the exam — plus 15 extra speaking sets. The audio is a free MP3 download, and the back of the book holds the answers and the transcripts of all recordings.
Who it suits best
- Candidates who already have roughly B1 and now need to rehearse the exam under real conditions.
- Self-learners: listening, reading and grammar can be checked alone with the key.
- Teachers running B1 preparation courses who need several complete papers.
Who should pick something else
- Anyone still learning Polish towards B1: the book tests, it does not teach. Start with a course such as Zdaj się na polski!.
- Learners who need instructions in English or another language — the book is in Polish only.
- People with nobody to check their writing and speaking: the author advises practising those parts with a teacher.
What's inside
- 7 complete exams, five modules each, with the timings and task types of the real exam.
- 15 additional speaking sets.
- Exam-procedure tips throughout the book.
- Answers and transcripts at the back; the 2023 edition adds sample written and spoken answers.
- Topics include student exchange, office work, travel, ecology, health, remote learning, Polish food, city life, self-employment, bilingual children and weddings.
What learners and teachers say
This is the best-reviewed of the newer exam books. An independent academic review of B1 preparation materials (Banach, Języki Obce w Szkole, 2022) describes it as "carefully prepared, methodologically and editorially". Its criticisms are specific: some true/false listening items are ambiguous, and e-mails appear more often in the writing section than in real exam sessions. A learner writing on the Belarusian tech portal devby.io called it "a very good and more up-to-date test collection" than Bądź na B1. On the Poltax bookshop it has five reviews, all 5 out of 5 (2024), including a learner who wrote "I passed Polish thanks to this book" and a teacher who uses it as the main book in B1 preparation — though one of the five comes from a person who works with the publisher.
Our verdict
The strongest mock-exam book on our list: more full papers than any alternative and closer to today's exam. Use it in the last one to three months before the exam, after a course. For extra practice by module — and AI feedback on your writing and speaking — try our free B1 practice tests.
