Polski B1

Polish B1 listening — sample tasks with transcript and answers

5 min read

Headphones, a pencil and an answer sheet with tick boxes lie on a table next to a mug of tea and a phone with an audio player

The listening module ("Rozumienie ze słuchu") of the B1 exam lasts 30 minutes, and you can score up to 30 points in it. To pass, you need at least 15 points, i.e. 50%.

Below you will find what this part of the exam looks like, plus three sample tasks with the recording transcript, the correct answers and an explanation of where the answer is in the recording. The tasks and recordings are our own practice materials in the exam format, not official exam papers.

B1 listening at a glance

What What it looks like
Time 30 minutes
Points up to 30, pass mark 15 (50%), usually 4–5 tasks
Recordings dialogues, announcements, phone calls, excerpts from radio programmes
Topics everyday life, family, free time, travel, work, shopping, health, services
Task types multiple choice, true/false, gap filling, matching, matching pictures

An important rule: in gap-filling tasks, correct spelling counts. If you hear the right answer but write it with a mistake, you may lose the point.

Task 1: multiple choice

You will hear an announcement at a train station. Choose the correct answer.

Recording transcript:

Uwaga, uwaga. Pociąg pospieszny z Krakowa do Gdańska, planowo odjeżdżający o godzinie 14:20, odjedzie z opóźnieniem około 25 minut. Pociąg odjedzie z peronu trzeciego, toru piątego, a nie, jak wcześniej podawano, z peronu drugiego. Za utrudnienia przepraszamy. (Attention, please. The fast train from Kraków to Gdańsk, scheduled to depart at 14:20, will depart about 25 minutes late. The train will depart from platform three, track five, and not, as announced earlier, from platform two. We apologise for the inconvenience.)

Question: Co się zmieniło? (What has changed?)

A. godzina odjazdu i peron (the departure time and the platform)

B. tylko godzina odjazdu (only the departure time)

C. stacja docelowa (the destination station)

Answer: A. The announcement mentions a delay (z opóźnieniem około 25 minut — about 25 minutes late) and a change of platform (z peronu trzeciego … a nie … z peronu drugiego — from platform three … not … from platform two). Answer B is a trap — you hear about the delay first, and it is easy to stop listening.

Task 2: true or false

You will hear a phone call. Mark whether the sentences are true (P) or false (F).

Recording transcript:

— Przychodnia „Zdrowie”, dzień dobry. (“Zdrowie” clinic, good morning.)

— Dzień dobry, chciałabym zapisać się do lekarza rodzinnego. Najlepiej jutro rano. (Good morning, I would like to make an appointment with a family doctor. Ideally tomorrow morning.)

— Jutro rano niestety nie mamy wolnych terminów. Mogę panią zapisać na jutro na 16:30 albo na czwartek na 9:00. (Unfortunately we have no free slots tomorrow morning. I can book you for tomorrow at 16:30 or for Thursday at 9:00.)

— To poproszę czwartek. Muszę coś ze sobą zabrać? (Then Thursday, please. Do I need to bring anything?)

— Proszę wziąć dowód osobisty i, jeśli pani ma, wyniki badań krwi. (Please bring your ID card and, if you have them, your blood test results.)

Sentences:

1. Pacjentka dostanie wizytę jutro rano. (The patient will get an appointment tomorrow morning.) — F (there are no morning slots)

2. Pacjentka wybiera wizytę w czwartek. (The patient chooses an appointment on Thursday.) — P (To poproszę czwartek — Then Thursday, please)

3. Wyniki badań krwi są obowiązkowe. (The blood test results are compulsory.) — F (jeśli pani ma — “if you have them”, so it is not an obligation)

Look closely at sentence 3: the test results do come up in the recording, but the words jeśli pani ma (if you have them) change the meaning. In true/false tasks, small words like these decide the answer.

Task 3: gap filling

You will hear a voice message. Complete the note with one or two words.

Recording transcript:

Przynieś, proszę, książkę i coś słodkiego. Do zobaczenia! (Hi Ania, it's Marek. Listen, we're moving the book club meeting from Friday to Saturday, because the library is closed on Friday. We start at six p.m. in the “Pod Zegarem” café on Długa Street. Please bring your book and something sweet. See you!)

Note:

Spotkanie klubu książki: w (1) ______, o godzinie (2) ______, w kawiarni na ulicy (3) ______. Trzeba przynieść książkę i (4) ______. (Book club meeting: on (1) ______, at (2) ______, in the café on (3) ______ Street. Bring your book and (4) ______.)

Answers: (1) sobotę (Saturday) · (2) osiemnastej / 18:00 (six p.m.) · (3) Długiej (Długa) · (4) coś słodkiego (something sweet)

In gap 1 it is easy to write piątek (Friday), because it is the first day you hear in the recording. But Friday is the old date. Also watch the endings: the note says w sobotę, so the correct form is sobotę, not sobota.

How to solve listening tasks

  • Read the questions before the recording. Then you know what information you are looking for — a time, a place, a reason.
  • Don't get stuck on an unknown word. The task checks a specific piece of information, not every word.
  • Watch out for corrections. Words like a nie (and not), jednak (however), niestety (unfortunately) often change the first piece of information.
  • Write briefly. In gap-filling tasks, one or two words are enough — but they must be spelled correctly.
  • Don't leave gaps empty. An empty gap will certainly not earn a point — it is better to write the most likely answer.

Where to practise listening

On Polski B1 you will find sample tests in the exam format with recordings — you can start with pack 1. We describe general strategies in the article Listening and reading on the Polish B1 exam — strategies, and the whole exam in What the Polish B1 certificate exam looks like. If listening is hard for you, regular study with our beginner course, where the dialogues have recordings, will help.

Module data checked on 22 October 2026 on the website of the University of Szczecin exam centre (polski.usz.edu.pl) and in the NAWA guide “Przetestuj swój polski!” (Test your Polish!) (nawa.gov.pl) for candidates taking the certificate exam. The tasks and transcripts in this article are our own and not official exam materials. We are not an exam centre and do not organise exams.
